May 10th, 2007 - The Cancer and Tumor Hospital of HCMC inaugurated their new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with donations that came from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Assist International and Rotary Clubs from the US and Canada. Over 130 000US in new and refurbished equipment from the US was donated to provide critical care monitoring and life support care for children suffering from Cancer.
Assist International, an American NGO specializing in setting up hospitals and clinics in developing countries, completed training and installation of the equipment during the week. "We are happy to help turn a room of despair into a room of hope for the children" said Bob Pagett, Chair of Assist International. "We are pleased to have worked with so many wonderful people to see this project through."
The project began in 2002 with a visit to the hospital by former CanCham President Michael Howard. He and Dr. Andrew Tsang, Committee Chair on the ICU, began the project, defining the scope of work needed, and the fundraising. During 2002, Forrest and Michelle Lloyd representing a Rotary Club in southern California visited the Hospital and began a state wide plan approaching various California Rotary Clubs for funds; together with the efforts of Sue McKinney, a well known Rotarian from California, to complete the fundraising and support.
